Abstract

Having the role of a polygamous wife not only creates a negative psychological impact but also have positive effects such as gratitude. Gratitude is the ability possessed by someone to believe in his life as something that is valuable. This study aims to determine how grateful for a polygamous wife. This study uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling with 4 informants and research data were collected through interviews. The results found that all four informants were grateful for their roles as polygamous wives. The form of gratitude felt by informant 1 was to feel grateful for the condition of his marriage because as the first wife felt duties in marriage were lighter because of the presence of the second wife. While informant 2 feels grateful for his polygamous marriage because the family of informants can multiply offspring. Furthermore informant 3 said that with the existence of polygamy marriage, they felt they were learning about the sincerity of accepting the destiny outlined by God. Informant 4 revealed that polygamy marriage was intended to help the second wife to become a better person than 2 before through the guidance of the informant's husband. This research also shows that social support can increase and influence individual gratitude.
