Abstract

Communication is a process by individuals or groups of people interact and connect with their surroundings. Use of social media to communicate flexibly. There are many speech act that we can find from the utterances conveyed by netizens. For example, the words of praise addressed to others on a success. It's called congratulations. The level of politeness can be seen from the context of the speaker's situation. This study aims to (1) identify the types of congratulations and (2) describe the politeness strategies used by social media users on Facebok addressed to Arya Permana. This research is a qualitative research. Sources of data from this study are comments written by social media users. The data used in this study are comments that contain congratulations. The method used is the method of observation. Data analysis using Pishghadam (2011) theory uses Elwood's taxonomy with a new model for the identification of new congratulations and Brown and Levinson's theory for politeness strategies. The results of this study indicate that facebookers use expressing feeling, complimenting, divine statement, blessing wish, mentioning the occasion and offering congratulation. Then, the politeness strategies found were positive politeness and bald-on record. In conclusion, expressing feeling and positive politeness is the dominant type and strategy used by social media users addressed to Arya Permana.
