Abstract
This study aims to analyze (1) describe students' abilities in expressing ideas or ideas in writing or pictures on solving straight line equations (2) describing students' abilities in expressing daily events using language or mathematical symbols (3) describing students' abilities in explain ideas or ideas verbally on solving straight line equation problems. This type of research is qualitative research. The research subjects were students of class VIII C SMP Muhammadiyah 7 Surakarta. The data were collected by means of tests, interviews and documentation. The test was followed by 30 students with 4 items in accordance with the indicators of mathematical communication skills, which were then taken by 6 students based on the test scores consisting of 2 students with the highest test scores, 2 students with moderate test scores, and 2 students with low test scores. to carry out an interview. Data analysis was performed through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that subject 1 and subject 2 had good mathematical communication skills, subject 3 and subject 4 had good mathematical communication skills, while subject 5 and subject 6 had poor mathematical communication skills.
