Abstract

STUDY OF INCREASED HARDNESS AND CHANGES IN THE MICROSTRUCTURE OF TOOL BLADES MADE OF LOW CARBON STEEL (S09CK) QUENCHED IN TEAK CHARCOAL LIQUID ABSTRACT Quenching is a metal hardening process by refrigeration accelerate from the austenizing temperature. This study aims to increase the hardness, tensile strength and to determine the changes in the microstructure of the tool knife and to determine the chemical composition contained in the tool knife. In this quenching process, the medium used is teak charcoal liquid. The material used is low carbon steel (S09CK). Furthermore, the specimens were subjected to hardness testing, tensile testing, microstructure photos and chemical composition tests. The chemical composition test results showed that the carbon value (C) of the quenching material and raw material was categorized in the medium carbon steel group with carbon (C = 0,0577% dan 0,069%). The tensile test results show that the quenching material has more brittle properties than the raw material. From the hardness test results, the average hardness value of quenching material is 213,66 VHN on the surface of 190,56 VHN on the in and 198,79 VHN and 113,46 VHN raw material. The resulting micro-phase photos are ferrite and pearlite. Keywords: Heat Treatment, Quenching, Low Carbon Steel.
