Abstract
The ability of mathematical representation is one of the abilities students must have in learning mathematics because representation is a form of interpretation of students' ideas on a problem that can be used to help students more easily understand and get solutions to the problems displayed. However, most students still have low mathematical representation ability because students find it difficult to solve problems in the form of mathematical representation. The purpose of this study is to describe the mathematical representation ability of students in solving linear inequality problems in one variable based on gender differences. This research is a type of qualitative research with the subject 2 class VII students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Kartasura. Data collection techniques by conducting tests, interviews, documentation. Data analysis techniques using data reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusions. The results showed male students have a high ability of visual and symbolic representation in mathematical expression, whereas for the ability of symbolic representation in mathematical models and verbal representations fall into the medium category. While female students have the ability of visual and symbolic representation in high mathematical models, while for the ability of symbolic representation in mathematical expressions and verbal representations fall into the medium category.
