Abstract

Antibiotics are chosen as a mainstay in the treatment of infections caused by bacteria. However, there are still many cases of inappropriate use of antibiotics. One of the inaccuracies in using antibiotics is the lack of public knowledge about antibiotics. The low level of knowledge affects the use of antibiotics to be inappropriate. As a result, serious problems can occur, namely the resistance of microorganisms. The resistance of microorganisms can make treatment difficult and long, thus increasing the cost of treatment. The purpose of writing this literature review is to determine the level of public knowledge about antibiotics and microorganism resistance. The research method was carried out in 4 steps, namely 1) Selecting the topic and topic formulation, 2) Searching the literature, 3) Evaluating the literature 4) Reviewing the selected literature. The search for articles was carried out through pubmed, using the PICO method. The keywords used in the search for articles were “community knowledge”, “public knowledge”, “antibiotics”, “resistance microorganisms”. There were 384,860 articles containing these keywords which were then followed by entering inclusion criteria, including 1) Articles published between 2015 and 2020, 2) English-language articles 3) articles can be accessed completely or for free (free full text). Obtained 4,224 articles, then 15 articles were randomly selected which have similar themes to each other. The results obtained were that 8 of the 15 articles discussed showed that the level of public knowledge about antibiotics was still low. There is a significant correlation between the low level of knowledge and the level of community education.
