Abstract

This study aimed to describe the ability of junior high school students in solving HOTS-based questions of the Pythagorean theorem content in analyzing, evaluating and creating aspects. The type of this research was descriptive qualitative. The research was conducted on class A of grade VIII of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Surakarta, with 19 students. The used data techniques were written tests and interviews. The used data analysis was Miles and Huberman model. The results of this study stated that the ability to solve HOTS-based story problem with the Pythagorean theorem content on the analyzing aspect was observed from the achievement of indicators, students were not yet perfect in sorting out the information that was known and what was asked of the questions, students were able to determine the mathematical models and their solutions, and students had not been perfect in attributing the solution to the context of the problem. The ability to solve HOTS-based story problems with the Pythagorean theorem content on the evaluation aspect was observed from the achievement of indicators, students had not been perfect in testing the truth of mathematical solutions that were presented and students were almost able to judge the correctness of the mathematical solutions that were presented. The ability to solve HOTS-based story problems with the Pythagorean theorem content on the aspect of creation was observed from the achievement of indicators, students were able to formulate problems related to the Pythagorean theorem from the quotes of the story, students were able to plan mathematical models and solutions that would be used, and students had not been perfect in making problems and solving problems related to the pythagoream theorem.
