Abstract

This research study deals with compliment expression used by social media users in BJ.Habibie’s obituary. The objectives of this study are: (1) To clarify the topics of giving compliment used by social media users in BJ. Habibie’s obituary. (2) To describe the functions of compliment expression used by social media users in BJ. Habibie’s obituary. The data are are the utterances containing compliment of the BJ.Habibie’s obituary. The data sources are the news or blog released about BJ.Habibie’s Obituary phenomena which are gathered by documentation and observation. The data are analysed by using in four steps, those steps are revealing, describing, analysing and drawing conclusion . The results of this study indicate that: (1) There are two types of the topic of compliment expressed by social media users on BJ. Habibie Obituary, the first is General Ability topic has 38% of percentage, and the second is Specific Ability has 62% percentage. It can be concluded that the most dominant topics of compliment expressed by social media users on BJ Habibie Obituary is the Specific Ability topic. (2) The writer found eight functions of compliment expressed by social media users on BJ. Habibie Obituary are follows: compliment to increase and consolidate solidarity, compliment to create or maintain rapport, compliment as spontaneous expression, compliment to express positive evaluation, compliment as encouragement, compliment to strengthen another speech act, compliment to soften criticism, The last is compliment as sarcasm. The dominant function of compliment expressed by social media users is the fourth function which has the positive evaluation purpose on BJ Habibie. The social media users focused on the capability, talent and sacrifice of BJ Habibie and expressed the compliment as condolence.
