Abstract

Carburizing is a heat treatment proceses which is carried out by heating the test specimen at austenite temperature in a room contanining carbon. Carburizing aims to increase the carbon content in the steel so that it produces hard steel. In this study the test specimen used was ST40 low carbon steel, the market-charred wood which was sifted using 200 mesh sieves and through a shakermill process with a ¼ inch steel ball size. Then the avarage particel area was observed and 244,977 μm2 result were obtained. From the above process low carbon steel is mixed with wood charcoal that has been processed and inserted into the stelonpotand other media to do the carburizing process with a temperature of 780 ºC with a holding time 4 hours. Microstructure testing aims to determine the carbon particles that enter the steel. Hardness testing aims to determine changes in the level of hardness of the material used, and the hardness results obtained at the 1st point 218.39 kg / mm2, 2nd point 164.09 kg / mm2, 3rd point 145.78 kg / mm2, 4th point 104.36 kg / mm2, point 5th 178.39 kg / mm2.
