Abstract

Pesantren in the 1980 's became an interesting conversation among governments, researchers, and other public. This is because the pesantren is considered an alternative education in the development of the community from below, to become a bridge of link increasing the participation and independence of the people. Looking at the context of the New Order era, the government is encouraging a more holistic community development program. At first the government focuses on the development of the community from the top down. Then it directs the development by involving the underworld in the sense of development from bottom up. Naturally considering the equitable development. The assessment of the Pesantren, is encouraged by two active NGOS and actively conducts research and publication of Pesantren. And produce books and magazines. The Institute is the Research Institute for Education and Economic and social lighting (LP3ES) and the Center for Research and community Service (P3M). M. Dawam Rahardjo or Mas Dawam his nickname at the time served as director. Dawam has the idea of renewal of Pesantren. The research aims to identify Dawam's criticism of the existence of pesantren as well as how renewal of boarding schools according to Dawam. This type of research is library research. By analyzing Dawam's works in relation to research. The approach of research using a philosophical approach is an approach that attempts to dig Dawam's ideas critically associated with Dawam's criticism of the existence of pesantren and renewal ideas. The data analysis method used is a descriptive analysis consisting of three things to do namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion withdrawal. The results of his critical interest in the existence of Pesantren, Dawam poured his ideas into three important points. The first, there needs to be rational institutional through democratic leadership. Secondly, the need to enter teaching skills for Pesantren as well as the pariative methods of teaching. Thirdly, there needs to be a rational managerial management by creating a queue organization. Based on the analysis of Education theory, Dawam's idea of renewal of Pesantren led to the theory of progressivism education.
