Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze and describe the thinking ability of students in solving HOTS problems on the subject of the system, the linear equations of two variables in class VIII SMP based on Ennis's critical thinking theory. This type of research is a qualitative study carried out in Simo 1 Public Middle School in the odd semester of the 2019/2020 academic year. The subjects of this study were students of class VIII SMP N 1 Simo. Data collection techniques in this study were carried out by tests and interviews. Data analysis techniques using analytical and qualitative methods. The results of the study explain that (1) Students with high thinking ability Already met the requirements of the indicators to provide HOTS questions that were given, meaning that in completing the two questions HOTS students who had provided supportive solutions, developed relationships with bases, made conclusions, made further discussions, and were last is strategy and battle; (2) students with existing thinking skills, take advantage of critical considerations including providing a foundation, building basic skills, making further explanations, and strategies and solutions to HOTS 1 problems and supporting the next question for HOTS 2 questions; (3) students with low thinking ability have supported critical thinking skills including providing a foundation, building basic skills, compiling, making further explanations, and strategies and assistance for HOTS 1 problems and supporting conclusions, and making further questions for question 2.
