Abstract

The difference in interpretation between Hamka and Thabathaba'i cannot be avoided, especially ideological and methodological differences in interpreting khalifah meanings in the Qur'an even though there are similarities on several sides, therefore this problem is interesting to study. The purpose of this study is to learn more about the concept of the Caliph in the Qur'an according to al-Azhar's and al-Mizan's interpretation and to compare between the two interpretations with descriptive-analytical-comparative methods. Based on this research it will be seen differences and similarities regarding the interpretation of the verses relating to the caliph in the Qur'an as well as the substantial differences between Hamka and Thabathaba'i to the concept of the caliph. Thabathaba'i considers that the caliph must be held by the priests ma'shum (free from sin and error) who are directly elected by God so that they are able to know the spiritual problems of the Muslims. Hamka considers that the caliph does not have to be held by a priest who is good, he can be occupied by anyone who is worthy of the Muslims. He was chosen and discussed by ahlul halli wal ‘aqdi.
