Abstract

National education functions to develop capabilities and shape the dignified character and civilization of the nation in the context of developing the intellectual life of the nation, aiming at developing the potential of students to become human beings who believe in and fear God Almighty, have noble, healthy, knowledgeable, capable, creative, independent and become democratic and responsible citizens. However, currently education in Indonesia cannot be considered successful in realizing the function of the national education. Therefore, the government through the National Ministry launched character education in the 2013 Curriculum. Based on these problems, this study aims to examine the intrinsic elements and values of character education in the novel The Children by Tere Liye, and their relevance as literary learning materials in high school. To find out these things, the sociological approach to literature is used. Data analysis techniques used in this study are qualitative descriptive techniques. The qualitative descriptive techniques is used to describing the data that has been found. This study shows that (1) the intrinsic element of Tere Liye's Si Anak Special novel in the form of the theme of the importance of education for everyone, the characters and characterizations consist of the main characters and supplementary characters. time, and social setting, the perspective used is the perspective of the first person, the style of language used by the author is very diverse, and the message given about the school is always important. (2) there are 16 values of character education contained in the novel Si Anak Spesial by Tere Liye. (3) The relevant Si Anak Special novel can be applied in the learning of Indonesian language and literature in the XII high school, namely basic competence 3.9 analyzing the content and linguistics of the novel.
