Abstract

Dictation is the right choice of words and harmony (in use). In making descriptive essays, there are still many students or students making mistakes in diction or incorrect word selection caused by several factors. Therefore, in this study the aim is to describe the causes of diction errors in essay text descriptions of grade VII students of SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Surakarta. The method used in this study is the listening method. The results of this study indicate that in writing essays in the description text of grade VII A and VII B students of SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Surakarta there were still found sentences which contained diction errors caused by several factors. Factors causing diction errors made by students of SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Surakarta include: (1) the ability to arrange words so that they become effective sentences, (2) the lack of students' understanding of how to make essays that are good and right, (3) the effect of using dialect language, (4) low vocabulary mastery.
