Abstract

The last treatment for cancer is chemotherapy with unpleasant side effects, incomplete healing, and even drug resistance. The genus Sonneratia mangrove contains potential compounds as an anticancer. This study aims to determine the cytotoxic potential of ethanol extract and three fractions of mangrove kedabu root bark and determine the compound content of ethanol extract of mangrove kedabu. The mangrove kedabu root bark was extracted by maceration method and fractionated by the liquid-liquid partition method. Thin-layer chromatography was used to determine the content of the ethanol extract compound from the mangrove kedabu root bark with silica gel GF254 and the mobile phase of ethyl acetate: n-hexane: methanol (9:1:0.1). The MTT assay method is used to determine cytotoxic activity. The concentration series used were 800, 400, 200. 100, and 50 µg/mL. The results of this study indicate that the n-hexane fraction and the ethyl acetate fraction of the mangrove kedabu root bark have the potential cytotoxic activity against MCF-7 cancer cells with IC50 values of 644.008 and 595.164 µg/mL, respectively. Ethanol extract and ethanol fraction: water has no potential cytotoxic activity against MCF-7 cancer cells. Group of compounds contained in ethanol extract, namely flavonoids, terpenoids, steroids, and phenolics.
