Abstract

Abstract Character development is an educational activity that carried out outside the lessons. The activity is carried out within the boarding school environment in order to expand knowledges, improve skills, and internalize religious values or rules as well as social norms to form a whole human being. The research on character development in the Islamic Boarding School Ta'mirul Islam examines what and how the success be achieved, with the aim of describing the form of character building of students through OSTI activities and identifying its the obstacles in Islamic Boarding School Ta'mirul Islam Surakarta in the academic year 2019/2020. This research is a qualitative research located at Islamic Boarding School Ta'mirul Islam Surakarta. The author conducts the case studies in the field using data collection methods, namely; interview, documentation, and observation. Data analysis was performed using the deductive method, which is based on theory and then adjusted to the findings of existing data in the field. Based on the study, the author can draw the conclusion of that there are 12 active extracurriculars to form students character building. While the role of OSTI is to realize the five objectives of the Islamic Boarding School Ta'mirul Islam in Surakarta in order to supervise and guide the students in terms of rules and worship activities. There are two obstacles in guiding students character; 1) internal: lack of role models from the final KMI students, lack of awareness of the importance of character development, violations and lack of ethics towards OSTI and 2) external: the easiness of students to commit violations because of entertainment venues close to the dormitory, such as; malls, cafes, and amusement park. There are three control solutions to effort; 1) by using the method of fostering character of ibrah and mau'idah, 2) further control efforts by providing sanctions such as tahajjud prayers for a week and cleaning the mosque, 3) by holding a court and granting punishment for the students who violate the rules.
