Abstract

This research focused on the defense in one of the characters in the novel Are You Afraid of The Dark ?. This novel was created by Sidney Sheldon which was published in 2004. The focus of this study was one of the characters, Diane Stevens. The purpose of this study is to discuss the defense mechanism carried out by Diane in dealing with assassins who lurk her and viewed from the perspective of individual psychology. Researchers used this perspective because ones are seen as social human beings who need each other. Every individual has different concerned in overcoming problems. That is the reason researchers used Alfred Adler's individual psychology approach. This research used a descriptive qualitative method. Qualitative methods referred to research etiquette that produce descriptive data in the lines of words and written behaviour. With this method, researcher described defense mechanism about the object of this study. This data is taken from all events that show a connection with the problem of Diane Stevens’s defense mechanism. The analysis in this study showed that Diane was a creative person, she tried to fight the killers who lurked her. She used her ideas to avoid the killers who wanted to kill her. It showed that in real life, a person has his or her own defense mechanism to fight something endangers his or her life. Keyword: defense mechanism, individual psychological approach, Sidney Sheldon
