Abstract

In the English Department students’ speech, we can find that there are still many speech errors; most of students do not prepare a good planning before producing a speech. Errors in performance occur when the users are unable to bring their competences properly into action. This becomes the main reason of speech errors made by them. This research is aimed to describe the types of speech errors, dominant speech errors and also the sources of speech errors found in the oral production made by English Department students at Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta. The type of the study is descriptive qualitative research. In collecting the data, firstly the writer records the English utterances spoken by English Department students, then transcribes the data into conversational text and makes list of data. The writer classifies speech errors based on Clark & Clark’s theory, calculates the dominant speech errors with Walizer’s formula, and describes the sources of speech errors based on Rochester’s perspective and Clark & Clark’s perspective. The research findings show that speech errors found in the data are silent pause (25,5%), filled pause (29,4%), retraced false starts (5%), unretraced false starts (3,5%), repeats (13,5%), corrections (1,3%), interjections (0,4%), stutters (2,2%), slips of tongue (2,1%) and the last lengthening the word pronunciation (17,1%). Slips of tongue are caused by certain conditions that make the speakers lose their control and difficulties in forming the articulatory programs in guiding articulatory muscles in execution. Other types of errors are caused by difficulties in planning and executing speech in the same time because of low ability in speaking English language and the rarely use of English language.
