Abstract

The object of the study is the movie of The Importance of Being Earnest directed by Oliver Parker. The study is to reveal how the quest for self – identity is reflected in Oliver Parker’s The Importance of Being Earnest movie in 2002. The objective of the study is to analyze the structural elements of the movie in order to identify the unity of the movie and to analyze major characters of the movie based on the sociological approach. The researcher employs the descriptive qualitative research as a type of the research. The data sources are divided into two, namely primary data source and secondary data source. The primary data source is The Importance of Being Earnest movie and the secondary data source is biography of character. The method of collecting data is note taking. The technique of analyzing data is descriptive. The results of the study are as follows. Firstly, based on the structural analysis, Oliver Parker delivers a moral message that truth is pure and never simple and the structural elements are related to each other and form a unity. Secondly, based on the Sociological Approach, Oliver Parker reflects self-identity of people which is very important in society in which without it, it will be barren
