Abstract
This research aims to develop HOTS assessment instrument to measure students' critical thinking skills in a number of class VIII pattern material first semester of this research method Research and Development (R & D). The instrument used in this study is the assessment instrument and sheet media expert validation and material. Characteristics of this study is an assessment instrument that measures students' ability to solve problems that require high order thinking ability and critical thinking. Subject of this research that half of junior high school students of class VIII 1. The results obtained validation of the percentage of material experts feasibility aspects of the content / materials, construction feasibility aspects and feasibility aspects of the language that is 0,92, 0,82 and 0,82. Media expert validation results showed a mean score of 3.6. Insrumen about distinguishing characteristics and difficulty level indicates the percentage of 0,39 and 0,49. Thus the assessment instruments that have been developed including in the category of good / feasible for use in the learning process. Based on the results of the work on the HOTS assessment instrument to measure the ability to think critically at SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Surakarta shows the ability to think highly enough and the ability to think critically is still in the lacking category.
