Abstract

The research is about describing the linguistics forms and the meaning of sports registers used in tabloid BOLA. The objectives are 1) to identify the forms of English sports registers used in tabloid BOLA, and 2) to describe the meaning of English sports registers used in tabloid BOLA. In this research, the writer uses a descriptive qualitative. The data are the sports registers used in tabloid BOLA in the form of words and compound word. He applies observation and documentation method to collect the data. The data are analyzed based on their linguistics forms and their meaning. In analyzing the meaning of the register, the writer employs the theory proposed by Halliday and Biber Douglas. The result of analysis shows that: 1) the linguistic forms of the register are divided into two, they are: words and compound words. The word consists of two categories; noun, and adjective. 2) The meaning of sports registers used in tabloid BOLA are divided into three categories, they are; (a) based on the fields, when the player or coach feels happy, when a player or coach is disappointed, when the player has a hope, and when a player or coach gives information; (b) based on the mode, the register is used in oral language; and (c) based on the tenor, the register is used among the player, coach, and sport journalist.
