Abstract

This study aims at describing the implementation of role play, describing whether role play can improve the students’ speaking mastery and describing the students’ responses on the implementation of role play in teaching speaking. The study was done in SMP 1 Bulukerto at the first year, using action research. The researcher took 30 students as the subject of the research. The researcher taught speaking English using role play method. The action consisted of two cycles in which each cycle consists of two meetings, and each cycle consists of four elements, namely: planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. To collect the data the researcher used observation, interview, and documents that consisted of tests (pre-test and post-test), and lesson plan. The result of the research shows that, by implementing role play in teaching speaking, the students have chance to be active and cooperative in teaching speaking. The students motivate themselves to speak and to practice speaking and the students’ speaking achievement is better. It can be seen from the result of the students’ activities during action, and the students speaking achievement of speaking. The result of pre-test score shows that there are 9 students who got score at (8.5-10) level range, 12 students at (7.5 - 8) level range, 5 students at (6.5 – 7) level range, and 4 students at (5.5 – 6) level range. While the result of post-test score shows that there are 11 students who got score at (8.5 – 10) level range, 16 students at (7.5 – 8) level range, 2 students at (6.5 – 7) level range, and 1 student at (5.5 – 6) level range. From the students’ responses, it is found that most of the students said that they like this technique. They could easily learn English speaking. The students admitted that their speaking was improved. The students could do post-test than pre-test which means that the teaching speaking using role play is successful to improve the students’ motivation to speak.
