Abstract

Mental retardation is a problem throughout the world, where mental retardation is the occurrence of the limitations of intelligence in children. Children who experience mental retardation experience rejection from parents because of the hope that their children are born normal. For parents who can accept their children, they are parents who have realized and understood the child's condition. Much acceptance of parents is motivated by the level of stability and emotional maturity of parents, the level of education, socioeconomic status, support of family members, religion and culture behind the family. In addition, the forms of support that contribute to the parents' acceptance of mentally retarded children are informational support, assessment support, internal support, and emotional support. This study aims to determine the relationship of family support with the acceptance of parents in children with mental retardation in extraordinary elementary school (SDLB) C / YPSLB Surakarta. This research is a descriptive analytic study. The study population was 32 parents / caregivers with mentally retarded children in SDLB C Surakarta, while the study sample was 32 parents / caregivers determined by total sampling. Data collection using questionnaires and data analysis with Chi Square test. The results of the study of the level of family support with the acceptance of parents in children with mental retardation in SDLB C / YPSLB mostly received with a good level of family support. There is a relationship between good family support can increase acceptance in parents with P = 0.002. Conclusion: the analysis concluded that there is a significant relationship between family support for parent acceptance with mental retardation children.
