Abstract

Analysis of microstructure and hardness level of hot rolled steel metal with the addition of coconut shell charcoal carbon with a mesh of 40.50.60 has been investigated. Hot rolling parameters and compressive forces are made uniform. The parameter used is the reduction in thickness from 3 mm to 2.85 mm which is done at room temperature. This study aims to produce a steel metal that has a high level of hardness. Hot rolling in this study used steel material with initial dimensions of 200 x 20 x 3 mm and then rolled out gradually by mixing different sizes of carbon powder with a size of 40.50.60 mesh. Physical properties are known based on microstructure testing and mechanical properties are known based on vikers hardness testing. Micro photo research results show that after rolling the shape of the grain is more flat, tends to be more dense and the grain boundary thinning, the thinning of the grain boundary caused by plastic deformation during rolling. Hardness testing shows that the highest average value is found in steel that is mixed with 60 mesh carbon, which is 138.2 VHN. The value of violence increases because the more weight percentages of carbon and the movement of dislocations will be more difficult because it is held by carbon reinforcement particles.
