Abstract

Carburizing pack is the simplest carburizing method, which uses charcoal powder as an addition of Carbon. The purpose of this study is to determine changes in the properties of steel, both physical and mechanical properties. The material used is low carbon steel (mild steel) <0.3% C. Variations here are using 200 mesh waru wood charcoal and waru wood charcoal produced by shaker mill. The process of blurring begins with mixing 80% waru wood charcoal and 20% BaCO3 then put into the pottery with the specimen position in the middle. Continued heating in the oven at a temperature of 900 ° C with a holding time of 2 hours then removed and left in the open air for ± 1 day, then tested its hardness by micro vikers method using a Micro Hardness Tester and observing the microstructure using the Inverted Metallurgical Microscope. From the results of the carburising process the hardness value of 164 VHN raw material on carbonization of 200 mesh waru wood charcoal is 183 VHN and on the carbonization of waru wood charcoal produced by shaker mill is 192 VHN. The price of hardness shows a decrease due to imperfect diffusion (the process of entering into steel) on carbonization.
