Abstract

Carburizing is the process of adding carbon content to the steel surface to get tougher steel properties on its surface by heating the metal in an environment that contains a lot of activated carbon. Carbon will diffuse into the metal with austenisation temperature which ranges from 760 ° C - 1300 ° C. The purpose of this study was to determine changes in the properties of steel both physical and mechanical properties. The material used is low carbon steel with a carbon content of 0.3%. The carbonization process begins with the mixing of 7 gram jackfruit charcoal and 1 gram BaCO3, then put it into a 900 ° C pottery with a holding time of 2 hours then removed and allowed to stand in the air for 1 day, then the material is tested hardness by vickers using the Micro Hardness method Tester and observation of microstructure with the Inverted Metallurgical Mecroscope tool. From the results of the initial raw material testing process included in the low carbon steel group with the element Carbon (C) 0.162%. The results of the microstructure in the raw material are more dominant ferrite, and the results of carbonization with the addition of 200 mesh sized charcoal have more ferrites while the carbonization results from charcoal produced from the shaker mill have more dominant pearlite. The highest hardness value on raw material is 168 VHN on carbonization with the addition of 200 mesh charcoal having the highest hardness of 210 VHN and on carbonization with charcoal from shaker mill results of 210 VHN.
