Abstract

Maron River is one of the recreational areas that offers exploration of the riverside in karst region. Tourism activities can affect the quality of the aquatic environment. One of the quality of the aquatic environment can be determined through the macrozoobenthos biodiversity contained in it. In addition, the characteristics of karst with high hardness levels can affect the survival of benthic organisms. This research was aimed to analyze the hardness level in Sungai Maron; analyze biodiversity of macorzoobenthos; and analyze the effect of hardness to benthos. This research was conducted with survey and laboratory experiments to evaluate the water environment quality and macrozoobenthos biodiversity. Purposive sampling approach was employed according to land use around the Maron River. Laboratory experiment to measure the hardness was done with titrimetric method while macrozoobenthos identification was carried out to determine biodiversity index, uniformity index, abundance index, and domination index. The results showed total hardness values from location 1 (settlement), location 2 (confluence of rivers) location 3 (drylands and forests), location 4 (meanders), and location 5 (ponds and coastal areas) were in the range of 516-3264 mg CaCO3/L. Calcium hardness has a range from 60.8-398.6 mg Ca/L and Magnesium hardness has a range between 45.7-552.1 mg Mg/L. Ion value of Ca2+ has a range between 24.32-159.44 mg/L and Ion Mg2+ 11.1-134.16 mg/L. Macrozoobenthos taxonomy identified in all of the sampling points were of species Clea helena, Filopaludina javanica, Melanoides tuberculata, Clithon corona, Corbicula javanica, Karstarma malang, dan Palaemon javanicus. There is a positive relationship between hardness and macrozoobenthos biodiversity. The influence can be caused by morphological and geological factors in the study area.
