Abstract
This study aims to examine and analyze: (1) the effect of contextual and conventional approaches on mathematics learning outcomes, (2) the effect of students 'initial abilities on mathematics learning outcomes, (3) the interaction between contextual approaches and students' initial abilities on mathematics learning outcomes. This type of quantitative research with experimental design. The population in this study were all students of class VIII SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Sragen. The sample in this study was selected by cluster random sampling technique consisting of classes VIII-B and VIII-C. Data collection techniques are done using test and documentation methods. Before conducting research, first performed a balance test to find out that both samples have the same ability. Normality test and homogeneity test are prerequisite tests of analysis in this study. The data analysis technique used variance analysis of two unequal cell lines with a significance level of 5%. The results of this study were obtained: (1) there was the influence of contextual and conventional approaches to mathematics learning outcomes, (2) there was an influence of students 'initial abilities on mathematics learning outcomes, (3) there was no interaction between contextual approaches and students' initial abilities towards mathematics learning outcomes.
