Abstract

Aluminum is one of material have bad weldability, because of the oxide layer appear on the aluminum surface and make it hard to welding. The problem of aluminum can be overcome with solid state welding, that is welding process wich is conducted when metal on the solid condition or metal didn’t reach melting point. Such as solid state welding is friction stir welding (FSW). This research is aiming to find phisycal and mechanical characteristic on weld joint using bending test, vickers hardnest test, and micro structur observation. Welding process on this research is using aluminum 6061 series with 3mm thickness, joint type using double side square butt joint. Various of spindle speed is 1320 rpm, 1750 rpm, and 2220 rpm, with constant feedrate 24 mm/minute and tilt angle 3o. The result of bending test shows the highest flexural strength is on 1320 rpm varian is 252.51 MPa. The highest hardnest number on weld nugget is on 1320 rpm varian 49.3 HV. Its caused friction of tool and material on 1320rpm is less, so the thermal input for 1320 rpm is less too. The result of micro structur observation is shows the HAZ zone has been change grain structure bigger than base metal and weld nugget zone has been change grain structure biggest than base metal.
