Abstract

Literature is divined into several forms such as novel, drama, and poetry. Poetry is one of literary works. It is presented through the condense word, beautiful of shape, and shares sense and feeling. It also tells the author’s experience. So, poetry is aimed at creating some pleasure through beautiful, elevated, imaginative and profound thought. Symbol is one of important elements in poetry. A symbol is anything, which signifies something. This study discusses about the symbol found in Edgar Allen Poe’s Poem, The Raven. The main purpose of this study is to find the answer of the problem: How is symbolism reflected in Edgar Allen Poe “The Raven”? The result of analysis shows that the symbols in The Raven belong to natural category (such as, fiery eyes, prophet, desert land, Demon and shadow, etc). Conventional category such as tapping, bleak December, chambers, bust of pallas, etc. And private symbol such as forgotten lore, sir/madam, soul within me burning, days of yore, etc. The most obvious symbol is the raven itself which Poe has already established the basic symbolic framework and which is both structurally simple and detailed.
