Abstract

The major problem of this study is how against slavery which occur in United Kingdoms society in the early of twentieth first century, is reflected in Michael Apted’s Amazing Grace. Meanwhile, this problem is limited on major character’s attempts to get material achievements viewed from Marxist theory. The objectives of the study are to analyze the structural elements of the movie and to identify the relation between the movie and the social realities of the United Kingdom in the early of twentieth first century. The object of research paper is the movie entitled Amazing Grace. This study belongs to qualitative study. In this method, the researcher uses two data sources: primary data and secondary data. The primary data and the object of study is Amazing Grace movie, meanwhile the secondary data are from essay, the biography of the author and other literary works which are related to this study. The technique of data analysis in this study is descriptive qualitative technique. Based on the analysis, the writer draws some conclusions. First, it is apparent that in this movie, Michael Apted delivering a massage that slavery is the worst type of oppression against the proletariat. Second, it is clear that in this movie Michael Apted reflect of the reality United Kingdom at the turn of the twenty – first century. He also criticized the tendency of the dominant culture to marginalize the minority. Third, Michael Apted gives understanding that people need to fight an injustice form not have to uses hardness but by political and art.
