Abstract

Background: Piriformis syndrome is a clinical condition of entrapment of the sciatic nerve at the level of the ischial tuberosity characterized by pain in the gluteal area or buttock that feels burning to the back of the leg. In addition, it can be followed by numbness in the buttocks and a tingling sensation along the distribution of the sciatic nerve. Objective: to determine the benefits of TENS (Transcutaneus Nerve Electrical Stimulation) and exercise therapy in the form of hold relax stretching to reduce pain, increase range of motion of hip, and increase functional ability in cases of Piriformis syndrome dextra. Results: After 4 treatments, the results showed a decrease in pain in the piriformis muscle assessed by Visual analogue scale (VAS), followed by an increase range of motion of hip assessed with a goniometer so that the patient's functional ability was assessed by the Oswestry disability index (ODI ). Conclusion: the provision of physiotherapy intervention in the form of transcutaneus electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) and exercise therapy in the form of hold relax stretching in piriformis syndrome results in a reduction in pain, an increase in the scope of joint motion, and an increase in functional abilities.
