Abstract

This study aims to describe students' mistakes and analyze the causes of students in completing the subject matter of the broad subject and the circumference of the square and rectangle based on Van Hiele's theory on class VII students of SMP 2 Karangtengah. This type of research is qualitative descriptive. The research subjects were students of class VII C Karangtengah 2 Middle School. Data collection methods used are tests, interviews, and documentation. The validity of the data used is the method triangulation by comparing the results of tests, interviews and documentation. The data analysis technique used is data reduction, data presentation, and data verification. The results of the study show that: (1) in stage 0 the visualization / introduction of all students is able to master it. (2) in stage 1 there are several students who make mistakes. The factor that causes this error to occur is that students have not been able to distinguish the units used in the area and length of a wake. (3) in stage 2 there are many relationships / relationships among students who are still wrong in their completion. Factors that cause this error occur, among others, is still a lack of students' ability to connect things in the problem in the abstract. (4) in stage 3 Deduction is still many students who make various mistakes. Factors that cause this error occur including errors in calculations, incorrect substitution of formulas, and cannot operate in the equation between the right and left segments. (5) in stage 4 axiomatic some students also still make mistakes. The factors that cause this error occur are inaccuracies in reading the questions, errors in making an example, and not accustomed to solving this kind of problem.
