Abstract

This research aims to describe the errors of students in solving equations and quadratic functions according to SOLO taxonomy and to analyze the factors that cause students to mistake in solving quadratic equations and functions. This research is a qualitative descriptive study involving 36 students of class XI Catering in the Vocational High School Muhammadiyah 2 Karanganyar. Techniques of data collection in this study are documentation and interviews, while techniques of data analysis in this study are data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusion. The results of this study indicate the type of student error in solving equations and quadratic functions based on SOLO taxonomy: 1) the prestructural level of 45.45% errors in a wrong process, 2) the unistructural level of 9.79% errors are the mistake about symbols, errors in symbols erroneous processes and calculation errors, 3) multistructural level of 32.17% errors are errors about symbols, erroneous processes and calculations, 4) relational level 4.20% of errors are errors about symbols and calculations, 5) extended abstract level 8.39% of errors are errors about symbols, erroneous processes and calculations. The causes of errors made by students are students who are not careful enough, lack of mastery of the equation and quadratic functions, the use of symbols that are not appropriate, the use of formulas that are still wrong, understanding of the basics of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
