Abstract

The main purpose of this research is to know the influence of the determinants of financial deepening such as per capita income, trade openness, inflation, and real interest rate in Java Island and Sumatera Island and to know how the difference of financial deepening between the two islands. Java Island and Sumatera Island are selected because these two islands have the largest share of bank credit compared to other islands. The size of financial deepening used in this study is the ratio of credit banking / GDP of each province. The analysis uses panel data with random effect method to find the influence factor of financial deepening in Java Island and Sumatera Island and add dummy variable (Java = 0 and Sumatera = 1) to distinguish provinces in both islands. The results showed that the variables of income per capita, inflation, and real interest rates have a positive and significant effect on financial deepening in both islands. The trade openness variables measured by the number of exports plus imports in the GDP (export + import / GDP) have a negative but not significant effect. Dummy variables show negative results, which means the financial deepening of the island of Sumatra is lower than the Java Island of 10,54 percent.
