Abstract

The metal joining process that is widely used in the manufacturing industry is welding. Metal welding is a fairly appropriate choice. Welding does not require a long time, the construction is light, has good connection capability, and relatively inexpensive costs. One relatively new welding technique is friction stir welding. This study discusses the mechanics and microstructure of brass plate joints in the friction stir welding with a variety of tool joint material. Welding in this research uses brass material, the connection using butt joint, the parameters used are rotational speed of 1250 rpm, feeding of 12.5 mm/minute. The tool joint material using AISI 4340 steel, AISI O1 and AISI D2. The analysis is done by looking at the strength of the connection, the results of welding compared to other welding. The results of this test show that the maximum tensile stress using the AISI 4340 joint tool is 332.7 Mpa and the maximum strain using the joint AISI O1 tool is 5.94%. Hardness testing in the stir area all improves base metal and HAZ. The microstructure testing in the stir zone shows that the grain size is smaller and smoother compared to the HAZ region or base metal, so that in the stir zone the value is higher than the HAZ region and base metal.
