Abstract

Galangal (Alpinia galanga (L.) Wild.) is a plant that has been studied as an anticancer agent. Other plants that also have cytotoxic activity are kemukus (Piper cubeba L.f.), cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum), kaffir lime (Citrus hystrix DC.) and areca nut (Areca catechu L.). The study was conducted to determine the effect of synergism between galangal and the four plants on T47D cells. The study was conducted by extraction of simplicia for 3 days. Then the fractionation was carried out with ethyl acetate : aquades. Cytotoxic activity was tested by using MTT assay. The synergistic effect is indicated by comparing of IC50 values between single and combination sample. The results showed that the combination of galangal with kemukus, cinnamon, kaffir lime and areca nut does not showed sinergism effect. The cytotoxic activity of the four plants against T47D cancer cells increased with combination with galangal. The IC50 value of single galangal is 60.96 µg/mL while the IC50 value of galangal is a combination of galangal; galangal-cinnamon; galangal kaffir lime and areca nut respectively 98.88; 83.24; 69.30 and 85.56 μg/mL.
