Abstract

This research is a library study research about Saigo’s struggle for freedom in Letters from Iwo Jima movie directed by Clint Eastwood. This research is aimed to show the struggle for freedom done by major character named Saigo in Letters from Iwo Jima movie by using an individual psychological approach. The formulation of problem statement is how Saigo’s struggle for freedom is reflected in Letters from Iwo Jima movie. It is done by establishing two objectives: the first is analyzing the structural elements of the film. And the last is analyzing the film based on an individual psychological approach. The study of this research is qualitative study. Type of data of the study is literary taken from two data sources: primary and secondary. The primary data sources taken from Letters from Iwo Jima movie directed by Clint Eastwood released in 2006. While the secondary data are some articles, books, and internet references which relevant with this study. Both data are collected through library research and analyzed by descriptive analyses. The study comes to the following conclusions. The first outcome is the structural elements of Letters from Iwo Jima movie. The structural elements of Letters from Iwo Jima movie includes character and characterization, casting, plot, point of view, theme, intent/message, setting, mise-en-scene, cinematography, sound, and editing. The second outcome Clint Eastwood regarded that motivated by desire for power to people to reach the freedom in their life done by Saigo as the major character. There are six points of an individual psychology which Clint Eastwood described in Saigo referring to Alfred Adler theory.
