Abstract

This research was conducted to investigate the effect of variations in carburizing media on the hardness and microstructure of low carbon steel in the pack carburizing process. The carburizing pack process is widely used to improve the mechanical properties of steel which requires a hard but tough surface on the inside. In this study the carburizing media used was rice husk charcoal with a weight percentage of 80% and active chemical NaCO3 of 20%. In this study the carburizing process was carried out at a temperature of 900 with a holding time of 2 hours with rice husk charcoal media and raw material. The highest comparison of hardness results is found in the workpiece in the mill shaker which is 198.5 HVN with an average value of material hardness of 182.28 HVN. Compared with the material value of 200 mesh at 164.5 HVN with an average value of material hardness of 158.1 HVN. So the workpiece after being carburized has an increase in hardness of 8.82%. Thus the holding time in the carburizing process affects material hardness
