Abstract

Self-identity is a thought about an individual's self-image that is carried out confidently and consciously. The study aims is to understand self-identity in adolescents who use social media. Data were obtained from 5 informants, 2 of whom came from Hope Vocational Schools and 3 from Islamic Civil Servants who used social media actively aged 14-18 years selected using a purposive technique. Data collection uses semi-structured interview method and documentation. Data analysis techniques used by using descriptive techniques to explain the results of the study. The results of the data obtained to 5 subjects using social media facebook, whatsapp, and instagram by displaying identities such as photos, usernames, bio guises in social media to carry out communication, information, entertainment activities and see friends' homepage (stalking). 3 of the 5 subjects have an extrovert attitude with open characteristics, are easy to get along with and like social activities such as uploading and replying to comments on social media and are in the open area A, while 2 subjects have introverted attitudes with characteristics that maintain privacy and dislike social activities such as uploading photos and stories in social media are in the hidden area C column in the johari window concept. Factors that influence adolescents include parental supervision in social media, influence of friends, and the mindset of adolescents in determining self-understanding which has an impact on the desire of adolescents to continue to use the social media guise identity they have in order to keep their place and friends to protect the privacy of people who want to abuse in social media.
