Abstract

Friction stir welding (FSW) is the process of connecting metals where a rotating tool is eaten along the joint line between two workpieces. One of the factors that can influence the results of welding is the preheating heat treatment process. In this study welding was carried out on aluminum 1100 with a size of 150 x 50 x 3 mm with a tool rotation of 1500 rpm and a feedrate of 60 mm / minute. This study aims to determine the effect of 200 ° C preheating temperature on the physical and mechanical properties of the 1100 aluminum joint using the friction stir welding method. From the results of this study, the maximum tensile stress and maximum tensile strain were obtained on quadrilateral pin profiles of 97.97 Mpa and 18.34%. From the results of vickers hardness test, the round pin profile has the highest average hardness, that is at 30 VHN welds, haz 31.33 VHN, base 32.66 VHN while the lowest hardness value is obtained by rectangular pin profile of 27.66 at weld, 27, 33 in haz, and 30.33 in base. From the observation of the micro structure there is a bright area which is the Al phase and the dark region which is the FeAl3 phase.
