Abstract
SMP N 16 Surakarta, (2) Describe the variety of uses of phrases in writing essays of VII grade students of SMP N 16 Surakarta. This research was conducted using qualitative methods. The object of research in this study is the phrase in writing essays of class VII students of SMP N 16 Surakarta. The source of the data obtained is the writing of essays of class VII students of SMP N 16 Surakarta. The data collection technique in this study is to see and note. The results of this study can be concluded that; First, the form of phrases found in the writing of essays by seventh grade students of Surakarta N 16 Middle School have five forms. The form includes: (20) substantive, (9) pronouns, (12) adjectives, (41) verbs, (16) prepositions. Second, the various phrases found in the writing of essays in grade VII students of SMP N 16 Surakarta are nine. The variety includes: (4) subjective, (19) objective, (10) locative, (8) possessive, (20) final, (3) positive, (14) original, (1) comparative, (7) instrumental.
