Abstract

Lost foam casting is one of the casting methods done by pouring molten metal into the molding sand planted with polystyrene foam pattern so that it would melt and evaporate. The purpose of this research is to determine the sand mold’s impacts on the sand’s permeability,shrinkage, porosity, density, hardness value, microstructure, and chemical composition. This research perfomed using furnace Aluminum left overs, with the variations of red sand, black sand, silica sand mold’s The analysis of the data results that the black sand’s mold has the lowest permeability at 59,667 cmᵌ/minute, red sand’s mold is 78,667 cmᵌ/minute and silica sand’s 93,667 cmᵌ/minute. The higest shrinkage rate of 1.35 % occurred on silica sand’s mold. While the red sand’s mold was at 1,32 % and black sand mold 1,30 %.hardness rate result obtained by hardness testing shows that the lowest rate of hardness was at black sand with 60,667 VHN, while at red sand the hardness rate is 65,667 VHN,and 69,357 VHN when the silica sand. The chemical composition of the Aluminum consist of (Al) 89.90%, (Si) 6.486, (Zn) 1.286%, and (Mg) 0.6081%.
