Abstract

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the carbon layer preheating on gray cast iron permanent mold at a temperature of 100 o C, 200 o C, 300 o C for physical and mechanical properties. The research method was carried out by melting cast iron in an induction furnace and then pouring it in permanent carbon-coated molds to make gray cast iron specimens then tested for physical and mechanical properties. Testing in the form of gray cast iron liquid using a CE meter device then specimens that have been prepared are tested for chemical composition, in the microstructure test and hardness test. The metal melting test results with CE meters obtained the initial temperature when poured in mold 1370 o C , temperature liquid 1120.2 o C the shape is still in the form of liquid, temperature solid 1111.1 o C the state of iron this time began to solid but still red until the final temperature 1060 o C where the iron has frozen. While the results of chemical tests in solid form include: C = 3.9%; Si = 2.2%; Mn = 0.4%; P = 0.08% 0.12%; Zn = 0.01%. The results of the microstructure of the speciments tested for hardness appear graphite and ferrite. The results of the specimen hardness test can be concluded that each part has varying degrees of hardness, because each tested point has a different carbon content. The higher the carbon content, the higher the level of hardness.
