Abstract

This research paper is aimed at describing the teaching-learning process of English using Silent Way at the fourth year of SDN 1 Gumiwang Lor, Wuryantoro, Wonogiri and describing the strengths and weakness of teaching-learning process using Silent Way. This study is a descriptive qualitative research. The data used in this research are derived from event, document, and informant. The data are gained from observation and interview with the teacher and the students. Based on the observation and interview, the writer draws some conclusions about the teaching-learning process of English using Silent Way at the fourth year of SDN I Gumiwang Lor, Wuryantoro, Wonogiri. First, in teaching learning process of Silent Way the teacher divided activities into four sections: look and listen, listen and repeat, exercise, discussion. In this section the teacher tries to elaborate the activities of teaching learning process. Second, the strengths of Silent Way are the method can save a lot of time, the writer can also observe that students can keep the material presented much longer in their mind, students become more active because the teacher gives more time to talk, the students are easier to remember the materials, especially about vocabulary. On the other hand Silent Way method also has some weaknesses, that is in providing the materials, the teacher needs some preparation. This method sometimes makes both teacher and students frustrated, especially when the students fail to guess the cues provided by the teacher.
