Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of permanent mold preheating at 100 ° C, 200 ° C, 300 ° C on the freezing speed of gray cast iron material. The methodology of this research is done by melting gray cast iron into the induction furnace until it is liquid and then poured into a permanent mold. Testing when the metal is still liquid using a CE meter test then after the material freezes, several tests are carried out including chemical composition test, micro structure test, hardness test. This study uses gray cast iron material. And these specimens will be determined 12 points per specimen to determine physical and mechanical properties at several predetermined points. Testing the chemical composition using a spectrometer while the hardness test uses rockwell micro hardness test. The result from the CE meter test showed a carbon content of 3.86% and silicon content of 2.38%. The test results show the effect of the preheating of the mold on the freezing speed of gray cast iron where the higher the preheating of the mold the longer the cooling rate. From the microstructure testing data on the parts tested the hardness was seen graphite and pearlite. The result of the hardness was that the highest price of hardness was in area D with a hardness of 73 HRC then the lowest in area 8 with a hardness of 53 HRC.
