Abstract

The major problem of this study is to elaborate Katherine’s conflict of interests appear in Mike Newell’s Monalisa Smile. Meanwhile, this problem is limited on the major character, especially Katherine Ann Watson. The objective of this study is to analyze the movie based on its structural element and using psychoanalytic approach. This research paper belongs to a qualitative study. The sources of the data are primary data source and secondary data source. Primary data is Monalisa Smile movie and secondary data source are books, thesis, and other data are related to the research. The method to analyze the data is descriptive analysis. The outcome of the study shows the following conclusion. First, the study shows that Mike Newell wants to convey a message that idealism is often in conflict with pragmatic interests. Second, Mike Newell wants to show that Katherine’s conflict appears when she almost follows her id.
