Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of copper powder addition in the brazing process of aluminium-stainless steel to the micro-structure and mechanical properties. The specimens in this research were used aluminium series 1000, stainless steel series 304, ER4043 alusol, and copper powder. The specimen was manufactured based on the ASTM D1002 standard for tensile test. SEM and EDX were performed to analyse the micro-structure and chemical compounds. The results show that the tensile strength was increased by the addition of copper powder. The highest tensile strength was 14.703 MPa. While the specimen without copper powder was delivered lower tensile strength of 10.850 MPa. The EDX test was shown that the concentration of Si was increased in the specimen with copper powder. It was 3.69%. It could increase the tensile strength due to the characteristic of Si in the brazing line. By using SEM, the inter-metallic compound was detected in all specimens during the magnification of 1000x. The length of inter-metallic layer of specimen with copper powder was lower than the other specimen. It was 11 µm. The specimen without copper powder was 94 µm length of inter-metallic layer. While the thickness of inter-metallic layer were detected in various thickness due to the grain of filler material. Keywords: Brazing, Scanning Electron Microscope, Intermetallics, copper powder.
