Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the mistakes of class VIII B Colomadu Middle School 2 students in solving the story problems of the Two Variable Linear Equation System based on the Newman method. This type of research was descriptive qualitative with case study research design conducted at Colomadu 2 Public Middle School in the odd semester of the year 2018/2019 lessons. The subject of this research is class VIII B Colomadu 2 Public High School. The technique of collecting data uses test, interview and documentation methods. Data analysis techniques used qualitative descriptive data analysis. The results of the study stated that (1) In the type of reading errors students make mistakes caused when students cannot read the questions correctly so that they cause differences in meaning from what they should mean, cannot read or interpret symbols in the questions, and do not know or find the keywords contained in the question, (2) in the type of error understanding students are able to read the question smoothly but students do not understand the problem so they cannot write also explain what is known and what is asked in the question, (3) In the type of transformation error students can read information, write what is known and asked, understand the steps but students make mistakes by using an incorrect formula, (4) In the type of calculation operation errors students have been able to read information, write down what is known and asked, use the formula correctly, use steps with true but students make mistakes when counting operations, (5) In the type of error drawing conclusions students read information correctly, write down what is known and asked, know the completion steps but students make mistakes when writing conclusions and do not write conclusions.
