Abstract

The purpose of this study was to improve the ability to solve mathematical problems through the Problem Based Learning model. This research is a classroom action research conducted collaboratively between researchers and mathematics teachers, where the subject of this study was students of class VIII B, amounting to 32 students. Data collection techniques in this study are by observation, field notes, and documentation. The technique of analyzing data through flow analysis techniques which includes 3 components, namely data reduction, data presentation and data verification. The validity of the data uses triangulation techniques. From the results of the study obtained data there is an increase in students' mathematical problem solving, it can be seen from the following data: 1) Students are able to show understanding of the problem before the action there were 10 students (31.25%) after being given the action increased to 25 students (78.125%). 2) Students are able to choose the problem solving method as many as 12 (37.5%) after being given action to increase to 28 students (87.5%). 3) Students are able to solve problems correctly as many as 7 students (21,875%) after being given the action increased to 20 (62.5%). 4) Students are able to see / re-examine their work by 5 students (15,625%) after being given action to increase to 17 students (53.125%). Based on the description it can be concluded that the application of the Problem Based Learning model can improve students' mathematical problem solving abilities.
